IPCI's comprehensive conservation project for pernambuco was
developed for IPCI by CEPLAC, a government agricultural and
forestry research institute located in Itabuna, Bahia. The program established a partnership of regional institutions that carried out inventories and genetic studies, researched pernambuco propagation methods, produce seedlings and implemented replanting strategies
in farm and forest locations. Programma Pau Brasil was launched
in 2005 after several years of planning and consultation. Over the
course of five years it produced significant results, including:

Over 150,000 pernambuco seedlings planted.

A sub-project, the Bolsa Verde project, planted additional seedlings in
three settlements maintained by the Landless Workers Movement (MST),
an organization representing and supporting Brazil's landless people.
